Otis stood on a platform suspended by ropes. He asked an assistant to cut the main rope. The platform dropped a few feet. Then it stopped. It did not crash to the floor. The automatic safety brake had engaged. It caught the rails. The crowd gasped. This demonstration proved that passenger elevators were safe.

Before this moment, buildings had a height limit. If you lived or worked too high up, you had to climb stairs. Most people couldn’t handle more than a few flights. Otis’s invention removed that ceiling. Literally.
