They look like a scattered collection of avian experiments, but they share a single evolutionary lineage. Piciforms are an order of birds that includes the woodpeckers you know. They also contain the toucans with their massive bills. Then there are the jacamars, puffbirds, and honey guides. Collectively, these arboreal birds number roughly 450 species. They live everywhere except Australia and Antarctica.
The diversity is staggering. These birds range from 8 to 63 centimeters in length. The rufous piculet is among the smallest. The toco toucan is one of the largest. Their beaks vary wildly in structure. Their overall morphology shifts just as much. Most feed on insects. Some reach into bark where no other bird can get.
Why Woodpeckers and Barbets Matter
The most widespread groups are the woodpeckers and barbets. They share a specific habit. They excavate their own nesting cavities. This behavior changes the ecosystem. It allows them to avoid competition with other birds for existing holes. But it does more than that.

A Global Distribution
Most of these species are tropical. The woodpecker family is the exception. It spreads into temperate zones. The others stay closer to the equator. Their adaptations are specialized. Some feed on honey. Others hunt insects under bark. The variety is driven by niche specialization. One bird cannot compete with another if it digs its own holes and eats different food.
The result is a global presence. They occupy forests across South America, Africa, and Asia. The toco toucan dominates the canopy with its size. The small piculets hide in dense foliage. The common thread is the ability to exploit vertical space in trees. They are not just residents of the forest. They are active shapers of it.
